Sid Fleischman is an accomplished children’s author best known for his children’s book, The Whipping Boy, which won the Newbery Medal award. He was born in 1920 in New York. He worked as a magician and later as a reporter for the San Diego Daily Journal. He has written many children’s books.
His stories inevitably reveal his interests and enthusiasms—his taste for the comic in life, his love of adventure, the seductions (for him) of the 19th-century American frontier. Fleischman's many novels combine adventure with history, humor with serious statement. His other acclaimed children’s novels include: By the Great Horn Spoon, Ghost in the Noonday Sun, 13th Floor, Bandit’s Moon, McBroom Tells the Truth, the Midnight Horse and many others.
In 1996, Fleischman released his autobiography, "The Abracadabra Kid: a Writer's Life", to widespread critical acclaim. Though it is the story of a grown man, a man 76 years old, in fact Fleischman writes as ever to a youthful audience. He also wrote many novels for adult readers, such as: The Straw Donkey Case, New York, Shanghai Flame, Look behind You Lady, Yellowleg and many others. He also wrote many magic books.
