Amber Woodcock,
Jewelry by Shyla

2012 Vendors Amber WoodcockI am Amber Woodcock designer of Shyla's Jewelry. My shop name is very special to me. It was the name of the nurse who saved my great grandmother’s life while she was in the hospital. She loved that nurse so much she wanted me to be named after her. In honor of my great Grandmother Tilly and all those Angels out there, I have named my shop Shylas’s.
I have always loved crafting. But it wasn’t until my first glimpse of jewelry making that I truly fell in love with the art. One day I saw a young girl making and selling a simple piece out of crystal and beads. I said to myself “I can do that!” and I can make it my way. I then started making pieces for family and friends as gifts. My happiness with making jewelry truly comes from making a piece to fit the person’s personality and style. I just know they will love it then. You can see it on their face when they open the gift.
I get inspiration from nature and colors and from the beads themselves. I usually start with a color that I want to work with, or a focal piece and then start pulling out beads from my many drawers, baskets and storage boxes. Once I have a pile of beads on my workbench, then the magic begins and I just go with the flow.
I love stones of almost any kind, shape, color, and I use a lot of Swarovski crystals, some wire and freshwater pearls. But, I also love the incredible colors and diversity of glass beads--both seed and larger sizes. I really love to mix it up--large stone beads with glass seed beads, crystal and wire. It is usually a color in nature that guides me. In the end.....no piece can go without a touch of sparkle! I say do what you love and don't worry about the latest fashion trend. I read a quote somewhere a long time ago that really inspired me, "I create what I love and sell to those who love what I create." And it really works. My customers tell me all the time that they can feel the love in my jewelry.
I hope you enjoy them. If you see something you like let me know and I can make it for you any way you want it. It will make me happy.

Annette Hernandez, The Embellished Bead

2012 Vendors Annette HernandezIt is my hope that my art Jewelry will enhance people’s lives. It is an expression of my soul that resonates through humanity.
Annette Hernandez is an award-winning artist in Orange County, California. She has earned 1st Place in the professional beading category at the Orange County Fair for the past six years and won Division Winner and Best in Show in 2011. Her work has been featured in several news articles and in books such as The Beaded Sphere and Variations. She has also displayed several of her pieces nationally in venues including the South Coast Art Gallery and the Irvine Fine Arts Center.
Annette’s inspiration comes from nature. Her early memories of playing in a nearby creek have motivated her to work with earthy colors. And the recollection of new falling snow has stimulated her to capture the beauty of ice in many of her pieces.
“I love working with tiny glass seed beads. The colors are endless. When I work with beads, it is like working with pixels. Each one has its effect on the finished piece. I begin a project with an idea and then I pick colors to make that project come alive. My favorite color is whatever I am currently working with. My favorite piece of art is whatever I have just finished.”
Annette is currently teaching beading at Irvine Valley College in Orange County, California. She has 120 students in 3 classes and has encouraged several of her students to pursue their own artistic visions. Six of her students have gone on to win awards at local venues.
For more information about Annette or about her artwork, contact The Embellished Bead at (949) 551-3930 or email her at annette444@cox.net.

Azita Tabib 2012 Vendors Azita TabibI have been in love with drawing ever since I could hold a pencil in my hands.
It is true almost with every child .it is the human nature to think or communicate visually and graphically.
But soon kids grow up, their vocabulary expands, and there won’t be much necessity for visual expressions in one’s life, except those who are in a strong bond with this kind of expression, and I was one of them.
I had my point of interest in drawing people accompanied by their feelings or persona. I started oil painting at an early age and by the age of 15, the portrait drawings from friends and family resembled them so much, that some have kept it even after 30 years. At 18, I started getting serious drawing lessons as I studied at school of Physical therapy. Though I graduated from school and worked as a therapist, I kept on working hard on cultivating art in my life, I learned fundamentals &concepts of design from teachings of two wonderful artists. The anatomy and kinesiology that was taught at school of PT, contributed to a more structured figurative art, and brought up ideas of how to keep a healthier physic while practicing art for long hours. Later, I set Physical therapy aside and focused on my family and art. I participated in numerous group exhibitions and juried shows, received awards and had my solo exhibition.
It was only after I started Yoga with a wonderful teacher 15 years ago, that I felt the urge to share my experience with those on this road to smoothen their journey as I also practiced my own skills. I  then outlined the goals and plan of teaching for both adults and children and started to give private lessons.
Gradually within years, Azita’s Workshop was formatted. Both Portrait Paintings and drawings, and Art lessons became the services that are offered by Azita’sworkshop.

Thank you for your time to read about my service. If you had any questions please contact me at : azitasworkshop@yahoo.com

Barbara Hanna 2012 Vendors Barbara HannaAll my life I have been attracted to the art world with a constant driving force, which has immersed me deeper in my passion throughout the years. I am attracted both to design and technique, aesthetics and functionality, and strive to produce work that can speak to anyone wanting to listen.
My ideas are constant and self-generated, born from my heart and soul. I am enthralled by never ending chances to create grace through technical exploration and mastery.
My goal is to learn to marry various materials to create a romantic balance, a peaceful, rustic, and elegant existence.
Barbara Lemke 2012 Vendors Barbara LemkeMost of what we own is mass produced and purchased by many people. Many of us don't even know what it feels like to have something no one else has.  Something that is one of a kind and picked just for us. Barbara Lemke is bringing that feeling back with her hand made plush toys she calls Cuddle Wumkins. Her items are available on her Etsy store and through word of mouth.

Barbara has had years of experience being self employed. Since selling her manufacturing company in Silicone Valley Barbara has been a business consultant, sales person, optician and manager. She has a passion to help people on all levels and today that passion is focused on the young at heart with her Cuddle Wumkins.
Beth Kukuk  2012 Vendors Beth KukukI grew up in Ohio, horseback riding and hiking through what is now called the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  I love the quiet beauty of nature.  As I’ve moved around the country I have been influenced by my surroundings: from the tropics of south Florida, the energy of Chicago, the history of Annapolis, to the power and beauty of the Pacific.  My jewelry designs reflect my journey, yet retain my roots.

I started my career as a kitchen designer, after receiving a BA from a liberal arts school in Ohio and studying design at The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale.  Eventually, I made the decision to stay at home with my kids, but found that I craved a creative outlet.  I simply had to create beautiful things.  I started making jewelry and found a new love.

As I’ve settled in southern California with my husband and three sons I’ve cherished the casual, sunny lifestyle.  I enjoy spending time at the beach, watching my boys play sports and reading.  All these activities influence my jewelry.

I enjoy making simple, lightweight, easy to wear jewelry.  I learned way back in high school art class that good design can be very simple.  By using quality materials, original ideas and good design I create jewelry that you can wear for any occasion.

You will find my pieces modern, yet organic, reflecting my life experiences.  I use high quality, natural materials including: sterling silver and 14kt gold-filled wire, chain and findings; semi-precious and natural stones, freshwater pearls, shell, wood, leather and silk.

You will find me at local arts & craft festivals, holiday boutiques, on my website at www.bethkukuk.com and on facebook at www.facebook.com/BethKukukJewelry.

Bonnie Anglin,
Bonnie’s Fossils and Rocks
2012 Vendors Bonnie AnglinBonnie and Mike Anglin have been fossil and mineral collectors for over twenty years. As a Middle School science teacher for 28 years, Bonnie often made fossils and rocks a part of her lessons. In 2002 they decided to sell some fossils and rocks from their collection in a neighborhood garage sale in order to buy new specimens to upgrade their collection. It was a total hit, especially with the neighborhood kids. The Anglins then decided to buy fossils, rocks and natural stone jewelry as a way to fund their own collecting hobby and also as a way to pass the joys of collecting fossils and rocks on to others. Our customers have asked us to sell at Bathgate School during their Earth day, at Carl Hanky School, and at Capo Valley High School. We have developed a large following of repeat customers, at the beginning and more advanced collecting levels, who take advantage of our low prices due to quantity buys and low overhead.
Mike routinely makes collecting trips to the California desert, Arizona, Wyoming, Utah and Arkansas. Both Mike and Bonnie buy fossils and minerals from all over the world both for their personal collection and to sell.
If you would like to find out about the items available, please call (949) 348-0808 or e-mail theanglins@cox.net.
Caroline Verhagen, Caroline4Art 2012 Vendors Caroline VerhagenLike many artists I started painting and drawing at a young age. I still have several of my childhood drawings of tigers and flowers. Over the years I have improved my art skills during my free hours. In the evenings I took several years of classes in drawing, creative painting and figure drawing at the SKVR Art School in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Currently, I am sharpening my skills with classes at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo. I work in a lot of media. I draw in pencil, color pencil, charcoal, and ink and I paint in oil, acrylic and watercolor.
I also love working with glass, making plates, jewelry and 3D sculptural pieces. Since 2007 I also teach beginning glass fusing. I love to see how others learn the skills and are able to express their creativity in their own personal way. I am loving my classes!
In my career as an artist I have received many rewards. My work has been put on a book cover, a piano piece has been composed to it, a dance has been choreographed to it, I have received Honorable Mentions, Third, Second and First prizes, Juror’s Award and Best of Show in art competitions. Still, the biggest reward to me is to make someone happy with something I created.
Enjoy my work, Caroline Verhagen

Dawn Mariko

2012 Vendors Dawn Mariko and Barbara LemkeI’m Dawn Mariko Spurlock.
I was born on April 5th, 1960 at South Coast Community Hospital in Laguna Beach, California.  I attended Laguna Beach schools from kindergarten until graduation. In 1977, I was chosen as one of Laguna Beach’s Junior Citizens of the Year.
After LBHS, I went to UC Santa Barbara on a volleyball scholarship.  In 1978, I decided to take my volleyball career to a professional level and played for the San Diego Breakers and Albuquerque Lasers.
In 1981, it was time to go back to school.  I moved to Santa Cruz, CA and attended Cabrillo College, which is well known for its art programs.  At Cabrillo, I dabbled in many mediums – from silk painting, batiking, weaving, Raku and graphic design.  It wasn’t until I “met” glass that I found true love.  The possibilities were endless and still are!
It was in Santa Cruz, where I became one of the first artists working with Ann Morehauser of AnnieGlass Studio.  During that ten year period, AnnieGlass had become the world’s foremost handmade glass studio.
In 1995, I moved to Arcata, California, where I was one of the founding artists at Fire & Light, a “cutting edge” green glass studio, which produced all of its product from recycled glass jars.  This is where I received my “hot glass” experience.
Since my entire family lives in Laguna Beach,  in 1998, I decided that it was time to come home.  Unfortunately, I was unable to afford a studio and, sadly, had to put my equipment down for a “nap”. I found a job at our local hardware store, where I was a manager for ten years. When that came to an end in April, 2009, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do so I turned back to my “love” – back to my glasswork.
As a kid, besides the beach, the Sawdust was one of the summer stomping grounds for me.   I applied for and was accepted as one of the participants in the 2010 Sawdust Festival. It was a dream come true and I am fortunate to be welcomed back this year.
I hope you enjoy my work as much as I love creating the ideas and finished product!

Deborah Stanley

2012 Vendors Deborah StanleyI am inspired by the majesty and completeness of life.  I love color and texture.

My creative interests help me balance my life: work, family, art.  The message I want to convey with my art is one of peace, harmony and simplicity.  I aspire to further develop my art and to share my heart with others in the midst of our busy lives.  I prefer a warm color palette and a soft expression.  My work flows as I respond to a model or scene.   I want the viewer to have a sense of rest in my art and to linger to finish the story I have begun.

I work in portraiture and landscape.  I love handling texture and color.  I prefer to design my fiber art based upon my watercolor paintings & drawings. The techniques I use include:
• Watercolor painting
• Painting with ink on textiles such as silk and cotton
• Quilting needlework

DiGUM, DiGUM photography 2012 Vendors DiGUM 2Beginning his photographic journey in High School, DiGUM has been enthralled with the art of capturing the moment since 1987. While specializing in fisheye and obscure shots, DiGUM’s pictures encompass everything from the sweetness of a family to the harshness of the city streets. He describes his work as the art of warping the natural eye’s view to find beauty you may not otherwise uncover. Preferring to use a Canon A-1 as his mainstay and still shooting in film, he is able to capture the depth and realism that life has to offer.

Gary Severen 2012 Vendors Gary Severen My name is Gary Severen and I do not consider myself an artist, but ideas flow from me like drool from a St. Bernard.  I was raised an Air Force brat, attended a variety of colleges: University of Hawaii, Kilgore College, University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico. I have a degree in Creative Writing, which I think I used once writing a thank you speech for someone else.
I began tinkering as a result of being banished to the garage for various infractions: rooting for the wrong basketball team, not knowing how to program the VCR, and ALWAYS when the boys brought new girlfriends over…what’s up with that?
I first went public with one of my “tinkered” items post-Katrina.  I attached little plastic hands to alligator clips and sold them as ‘helping hands’ as a fund raiser at Mission Viejo High School.  I diversified   a couple years later with an invention that got me on Americas Greatest Inventor. (My family did actually go into hiding until my debut passed).  My wife and sons are no longer embarrassed of me; they just smile and change the subject.
I got involved with clocks when I decided to protest Daylight Savings Time.  I wanted to just move the time forward ½ hour and leave it that way all year.  My loving wife said something to the effect of; “not with my clocks”.  And so it began.
I began to look for unique clock faces, and the ideas began to flow again-remember…like the drool.  What you see are complete originals, handmade in a messy garage, and they make me happy. I hope they will do the same for you.
On a more serious note, I have devoted an adaptation of my “helping hands” clips to raise awareness in the many Cancers that affect us.  My Cancer Clips are (again) alligator clip based, but now include a ring for hanging glasses and sunglasses from wherever they are attached on the collar or clothing.  I have color coded the Cancer Clips to correspond with the colors that raise awareness of particular cancers, i.e.: Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, and so on.
The purchase and use of the Cancer Clips will help raise awareness of that particular Cancer.
I thank you.

Loretta Alvarado, How Original! 2012 Vendors Loretta Alvarado
I have enjoyed working with fabrics and fibers since I was a child. My first foray into the world of art was while I was taking a class in technical drafting. By combining the skills learned in the drafting class with my love of fibers, I had my first taste of a new career.
I started out doing craft shows but soon discovered that this was really not the proper venue for the type of work that I really wanted to do. When I was juried into the Art-A-Fair Festival, an entirely new world was opened to me. My work was readily accepted as art and I as an artist. This was an interesting transition after a career as an engineer with no art training. Under the influence of all the beautiful artwork in Laguna Beach, my work became less of an exercise in precision and more of an artistic expression. I observed the works of some of my favorite artists and tried to emulate their techniques using the media of fabric and fibers rather than paints. Gradually, my own voice evolved.
My art has led me to some interesting experiences including several television appearances, ownership of an art gallery, curator of multiple exhibitions including “In the Toilet – an Exhibit of Art Meets Function,” and being named one of the top Hispanic business women of the year in 2004. My work has been shown at the Art-A-Fair Festival; the Sawdust Winter Fantasy; the Montrose Arts Festival; Oceanside Days of Art; San Diego ArtWalk; Mission Viejo Chalk Festival; How Original! An Art Gallery in Laguna Beach; a solo show at the Colony Theatre in Burbank; a solo show at the City of Buena Park City Hall; the West Valley Art Museum in Peoria, Arizona; the Page-Walker Art Center in Cary, North Carolina; the Bazaar Del Mundo Wearable Art Show in San Diego; Encrustations, a special exhibit at the Houston International Quilt Festival in Houston Texas; Saddleback Art League rotating exhibit; the Orange Open - Orange Art League; Fallbrook Art Center; Art That’s Small in City Hall in Laguna Beach; and many others.

Moshira Salama, Morshira's Art & Custom Framing 2012 Vendors Moshira SalamaI have a passion for Arts and crafts as I began drawing and crafting since I was 6 years old. I am a painter and visual design artist. I can custom paint oil, acrylic, and water color to match your home décor. I am also a jewelry designer that uses the best quality natural stone and sterling silver in unique designs. I design and make custom jewelry to match outfits and special events.

My love for art has taken me to a different type of crafting, custom framing. I became a certified custom framer in 1994 and worked as a custom frame shop manager/designer in known retail stores such as Michael’s and Tall Mouse. I now operate independently and have my own gallery located in beautiful Rancho Santa Margarita. Moshira’s Art & Custom Framing Gallery offers boasting tens-of-thousands of mat, frame, liner, glass, and shadow box samples. I use archival and conservation quality mounting materials and techniques. Rare items are especially well cared for and carefully secured. My gallery also includes my own custom-made jewelry and paintings.

I look forward to serving my community and sharing my vision and love of arts with them.

Rebecca Marquez, GNi Designs 2012 Vendors Rebecca MarquezGNi Designs is the home studio of Rebecca Marquez.  Professionally, she is a designer for an architecture firm in San Diego, CA.  Outside of the office, and when she is not glued to her piano bench, she loves to create modern glass artwork.  Her background in architecture is a huge influence on her method of work, in that her designs are very carefully planned and scrutinized.
 Sam Maghawiri

2012 Vendors Sam MaghawiriAt a very young age, I remember admiring my brother’s ability to draw.  Growing up, I use to carve from blocks of wood, making them into sculptures of animals, cars and planes; fulfilling my creative side.  In my youth, I also carved key chains from bark of Pine trees to give as gifts.  I was aware of the colors around me, seeing the Blues of the sea and the Greens of the trees after the rain.

As a young man I came to the United States and landed in Houston, Texas, to continue my education.  Interested in art, I found an Art Supply store on Voss Street and met an Asian man who worked there and he enlightened me on the supplies that are needed to paint.
He mentored me with oils, learning about brushes and canvas.  What interested me most was painting people’s faces. The character that I first painted was Sam Fischer, based on the book “Splinter Cell” by Tom Clancy.  After that, when I took acting classes, I was intrigued with old time actors such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.  The period I went through then was painting in Black, White and Gray, such as their films.

Inspired by acting, I learned about great artists from film, such as Jackson Pollack, Modigliani and Van Gogh.  I turned to my profession and love of acting and started to paint portraits of actors in select colors of a touch of Red.  Some of the first actors I painted were; James Dean, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Al Pacino, in an abstract way and which I bartered for acting lessons with my professor Ron Jackson, who played the FBI spokesman on the Oliver Stone film JFK.   Other actors that I painted portraits of were:  Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, John Wayne, Gene Kelly and Jack Kennedy, to name a few.

Now living in Southern California and working in acrylics, my most recent painting is in the memory of Steve Jobs, titled:  “Think Colors”

2012 Vendors Sandy Mathews-WoodcockAs a photographer, I am sometimes asked what subjects most inspire me. I answer that all the world is my inspiration. I enjoy shooting land and seascapes as much as gritty cityscapes. Nature inspires me to capture vibrant birds, flowers and wildlife with my lens. People and pets interacting with their environment also make fascinating and amusing subjects. The performing arts also fire my imagination with vivid action and color. There is not much in this wonderful world of ours that does not beg to be the subject for a photograph.
To turn a phrase from the Bard himself - “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women … subjects for my lens…”
I am a native Californian and first generation American. My parents were both classical musicians and immigrated to the Los Angeles area in 1950 from Russia and Latvia. I followed in my mother’s footsteps and have been a librarian for the past 30 + years.
They say that talent skips a generation, so while I wasn’t graced with much of my parents’ musical abilities, I did inherit my father’s love of photography. The brittle pages of aging photo albums are filled with family and vacation photos taken while exploring California with his old accordion Kodak 620, and later, a Minolta 35 mm. During my middle school years I was given a Kodak Instamatic, but I didn’t really get bit by the shutter bug until my father gave me a Rolleiflex SL 35 when I was in college. By the time I met and married my husband Bruce in the early 80s, I had moved on to a Nikon FM2 and have been a Nikon shooter ever since . Over the years my husband and I have spent many vacations photographing and retracing the steps my father took – hiking and fishing in the Sierras, driving the rugged coastline along Highway 1, and savoring the scenic beaches, mountains and deserts of SoCal.
Many of my subjects are taken from nature – inspired by the breathtaking landscapes, flora and fauna of California and the Western states. During the last few years I have also had the unique opportunity to photograph many of the cultural programs and events that take place at the Rancho Mirage Library where I work. Recently I have also ventured into model and product photography – shooting images of my daughter’s jewelry creations. My daughter, Amber, and I are sharing a booth for the first time at Arts Alive, blending our creativity as Shyla’s Jewelry and Photography by Alexpressions.

Sheryl Van Ruiten

2012 Vendors Sheryl Van RuitenSheryl Van Ruiten has been a resident of Mission Viejo for more than 25 years. She has always enjoyed capturing her adventures on film and takes her camera with her where ever she goes. Her travels, both domestic and international, have allowed her the opportunity to see the world. She has captured the many diversities it holds, not only in landscapes and architecture, but in the faces of people around the globe.
In recent years she has refined her artistic skills by taking formal training from professional photographers. Her signature form of art is Brushstrokes. This is a technique she uses on her original photographs. By applying a medium onto the photo and then adding oils to highlight the focal points of the picture, she gives the finished work the look of an oil painting.
Her photography has been shown at the Orange County Fair, and the Art Institute of California Gallery in San Diego

Teresa Downer 2012 Vendors Teresa DownerThank you for your interest in my work. I was born in 1968 in the sunny San Fernando Valley and have spent my whole life in southern California. As the youngest child born into an artistic family, my desire to create was ignited at a very young age. Although I graduated from California State University Northridge with a BS degree in Fashion Design under Home Economics, I always gravitated more towards my illustration and textile design classes. It was here that I also learned manipulation of fabrics which I later transitioned into manipulation of papers which can be seen in my art today. I spent many years working in the fashion design and wholesale industry of clothing and shoes, and that experience has influenced my art as well. With my dimensional collage pieces I am able to get lost for hours manipulating and cutting recycled papers, fabrics, wire, and other found objects and combining those with a mix of acrylic paints to create my images within shadowbox spaces. I love the uninhibited feeling this type of art gives me as it allows me to work with a variety of materials in unlimited ways.
Tim Stanley

2012 Vendors Tim StanleyI think the best creative writing is a gift more than it is a manufactured product. Mark Twain said, “writing is ten percent inspiration and ninety percent perspiration.” Without the ten percent, the ninety percent will have neither heart nor lasting value. Likewise, without the ninety percent, the beauty of the ten percent cannot be communicated clearly.
What I desire to do as a writer is to make a connection with the reader. To do this I need to not only communicate clearly but also allow the reader access to my heart.
It is my goal to produce wholesome, educational, and thoughtful reading material at the highest quality standard. Whether I am telling the story of a bird friend of mine, or of working on the farm as a kid, I want the reader to be refreshed and to be left with something of substance to ponder for a long time.
