National Center for Missing & Exploited Children
National 24-hour toll-free missing children’s hotline 1-800-THE-LOST.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has become the leading nonprofit organization in the U.S. working with law enforcement to address the problems of missing and sexually exploited children. They produce a myriad of child safety materials addressing numerous areas of vulnerability.
NCMEC Includes Internet and Technology Safety
NCMEC has put forth great effort into developing a user friendly website, "NetSmartz", that reaches a variety of audiences. NetSmartz411 is a parent or guardian's premier, online resource for answering questions about internet safety, computers, and the Web. It includes an "Ask the Experts" tab.
WWW.NETSMARTZ.ORG provides parents, teens, tweens and elementary school age children with age-appropriate and crucial information, including presentations. The website explores a variety of social safety issues regarding the internet and cell phones, including topics such as sexting, illicit relationships and cyber-bullying. The site uses fun videos but also shares the possible dangers the internet and other technological media present.
It is recommended that parents view the site’s parent section in totality. Then review the child sections together in order to encourage open discussion. Communication is vital to your ability in having input into your child's decision making and also assists in maintaining a watchful eye on their behaviors.
