Opportunities for giving back this holiday season are plentiful

give back

If you want to give back to those in need, there are many opportunities to make the holidays a bit brighter for local families. Here are a few to consider:

South County Outreach provides housing assistance, food and other services to thousands of local families. In fact, its food pantry alone distributes nearly a million pounds of emergency, non-perishable and fresh food to about 9,000 families annually. South County Outreach is hosting Adopt-A-Family and Adopt-A-Senior programs as well as a holiday toy drive for children and families in our area. To get involved, visit www.sco-oc.org.

Family Assistance Ministries also works to prevent hunger and homelessness in Orange County – touching more than 50,000 people in need each year. This organization has a Christmas Adopt-A-Family program and annual children’s holiday party and is seeking toys and gift cards for teens. Contact 949-492-8477 ext. 115 or lorraine@family-assistance.org for details.

You can also support Families Forward’s Adopt-A-Family program that gives individuals, companies and community organizations the opportunity to spread warmth and bring holiday joy to low-income families. Last year, the community brought holiday cheer to more than 800 struggling families, providing gifts for more than 2,000 children.  Visit http://www.families-forward.org/events/#ffs-tabbed-16 for more information.

In Mission Viejo, our City teams up with the Marine Adoption Committee to host a toy drive to support our adopted Marine battalion at Camp Pendleton.  Collection bins will be placed in all City buildings from November 28 through December 23. In addition, community members can adopt a Marine family for the holidays and buy gifts for each family member based on specific wish lists. For more information, call 949-470-3061.

Hi, I’m wondering how to become a family to be adopted this Christmas? I’m a mom of 3. We just moved to Mission Viejo in August with my fiancé and his two daughters. The company my fiancé worked for got bought out and he lost his job and to top it all off he tore his Achilles’ tendon in the same week and is now disabled for the next 6 months. I’m worried about our kids Christmas this year since I now have to work for the both of us and be more focused on our rent and bills during this time. Is there anything you could do for us?
