Dog Walker Volunteer Description and Duties

Program Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to work a three hour shift weekly, and provide a one year commitment.
  • A valid tetanus vaccine record is required within 30 days.
  • Must be physically able to walk an untrained (pulling on the leash) 80 pound dog. The shelter has a few small dogs and the majority of the dogs have not had any training.
  • Must be physically be able to squat multiple times throughout the shift.
  • Ability to interact with animals safely.
  • Ability to recognize abnormalities in animal behavior and health.

Process:

  • Must attend a interview, volunteer orientation and training session (training provided)

  • Chance to work with other animal enthusiasts.

Purpose:

  • To exercise and socialize the dogs at the center
  • Assist in educating the public about responsible pet ownership, and help potential pet owners in the selection and adoption of a new pet.

Duties:

  • Walk and socialize dogs in exercise areas
  • Show and assist the public with questions regarding dogs
  • Notify kennel attendants of any health or behavior issues noticed
