Virtual Town Hall - Residential Food Scrap Recycling Program

Residents of the City of Mission Viejo will soon be able to recycle their food scraps and yard/green waste together! Starting January 1, 2022, residents should begin placing food scraps, such as fruit and vegetable trimmings, eggshells, pasta, grains, coffee grounds, leftover inedible food, and expired food, along with their garden trimmings into the green-lidded container provided by the City’s waste hauler, Waste Management of Orange County. The materials will be collected on the same day as your trash and recycling containers, and they will be brought to a facility to be composted.

This change is brought about by California’s new Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383), which requires everyone across the state to participate in organics recycling. SB 1383 aims to reduce short-lived climate pollutants coming from our local landfills from food rotting and emitting methane. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that traps heat in our atmosphere, which is bad for our environment and climate. By collecting food scraps and yard waste to be composted, we can avoid some of these negative effects of sending these materials to landfill and create nutritious soil amendment in the process!

Waste Management will be hosting a community virtual town hall to discuss the new program and answer any questions. These online meeting may be accessed at 6 PM on December 16.
