Council recognizes outstanding individuals and conducts other business Tuesday
The City Council on Tuesday recognized some outstanding individuals and organizations and approved the City’s Mid-Year Budget for Fiscal Year 2023-24.
During the presentation portion of the meeting, the Mission Viejo Community Foundation received a check from the nonprofit Care 4 the Children. The funds stem from an innovative approach to repainting curb addresses on public streets. House numbers appropriately painted and maintained on curbs allow firefighters, police and emergency medical crews to find the target address while still in their vehicles. As State labor laws now make curb address painting extremely costly for public agencies, the City opted for Care 4 the Children to perform the work on a voluntary donation basis. Proceeds went to help folks in need with 20 percent of net proceeds ($7,556) going to the Mission Viejo Community Foundation. Mayor Trish Kelley noted that the funds will be used to support the adopted Headquarters Battalion of the 1st Marine Division stationed at Camp Pendleton, and Marines and Sailors Adoption Committee Chairwoman Gayle Wood spoke of the committee’s appreciation for the community’s efforts.
The Council also recognized "Marine of the Quarter" Lance Corporal Nathan Heed and "Noncommissioned Officers of the Quarter" Sergeant Nathaniel Fayard and Sergeant Renee Ried for their individual, outstanding and exemplary efforts to obtain the distinctions.
Council Members received a presentation from Waste Management Senior Account Executive Muyisa Kasomo that spotlighted recent achievements of City staff and Waste Management as well as upcoming events such as the e-waste and household hazardous waste collection event on March 16; document shredding event on March 23; compost workshop on April 6; and compost giveaway on April 27.
In addition to designating March as American Red Cross Month, Council Members also approved the Mid-Year Budget for Fiscal Year 2023-24.
