Abandoned parakeets in the wild will soon be available for adoption

parakeets

Roughly 30 parakeets that were abandoned on a trail will soon be available for adoption at the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center.

The parakeets were discovered by a Laguna Niguel resident while walking his dog on a local trail. When the resident called the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center, he said the birds were “not wild, could not fly and must have been abandoned.”

“We asked if he could send a photo of the birds, which he did, and it was clear these abandoned birds were domestic parakeets that should not be living on a trail,” said Animal Care Supervisor Brynn Lavison. Field Supervisor Helton and Reserve Animal Control Officer Potter were immediately dispatched to the area and were able to catch and impound 26 parakeets. Upon arrival at our shelter, each bird was named, photographed, assessed for medical issues, and their wings were clipped. Some look like they were attacked by larger birds, but now that they are safe at our shelter, their health should improve quickly.”

The birds will be available for adoption on April 17 for the special price of $10. Parakeets make charming pets, especially for kids. They make delightful chirping sounds, and most can be hand-tamed easily.

“I had two parakeets growing up and enjoyed watching, holding, and listening to them,” Brynn said. “They take a little bit of maintenance to keep them clean and fed but are generally an easy pet.”

For more information about adoptions or if you know who may have owned these birds, contact the center at 949-470-3045.

I have a very large cage that once housed 3 finches. It could easily handle
1-2 parakeets. I am familiar with all birds and would give them a good home.

Is it too soon to submit an online application for the parakeet adoption? I'm having trouble finding the link.

Thank you

We are interested in adopting a parakeet. Love birds and have had a few over the year. Our last bird was a budgie. We have a large cage all ready to go and live in Mission Viejo

I would like to adopt one parakeet. I have had birds as pets for my entire life and I would give it a good home. Is it possible to come in on Saturday instead of Easter Sunday? What is the application process? I have a large cage ready for a new friend. My last parakeet lived 14 years.
I live in Corona.

I currently have a parakeet. I have had one as a pet most of my life. I wold be glad to take one of them. I would get a separate cage since I don't know how my pet will feel about sharing after several years although he is kind and doesn't bite. I live several miles away in Beaumont. I would see if I can get away on Easter Sunday.

A few months ago I lost my little parakeet and hav been looking for one to adopt that needs a new home. I would love to provide a home for for 1 or 2 of these sweet little guys! Have complete setup for parakeets…large cage, seed, and would be sure they get regularly checked by veterinarian. Hope to visit the shelter tomorrow!

I would like to adopt any budgies that need homes after being abandoned on the walking trail. Let me know who needs s home and when we could come to bring them to their forever home.
