Additional public hearings regarding potential district-based elections set for January 9 & 12
Just after the New Year, the City Council will host the third and fourth of five public hearings to discuss the City's interest in and the process for transitioning from at-large to district-based council member elections.
The public hearings will take place at 6 p.m. on January 9 and again on January 12 in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.
The hearings are prompted by a demand letter the City of Mission Viejo received from a Malibu-based law firm claiming the City’s at-large election system dilutes the vote of the Latino community. During the public hearings, residents will have the chance to weigh in on the composition of the districts and provide input regarding the content of draft maps and the proposed sequence of elections.
To simplify the public’s participation, the City of Mission Viejo has also created a how-to video for drawing district maps as well as webpages with history and information about the process.
Council meetings are streamed live at https://cityofmissionviejo.org/stream and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T Channel 99.
