Alcohol and Speakeasies in Orange County

wine and grapes

Mark your calendar for Friday, March 23 when local historians Manny Escamilla and Dylan Almendral present a fun and informative program on the early history of alcohol in Orange County. The evening begins with a no-host wine bar at 6:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.

Escamilla will cover the late 1800s through the rise of the temperance movement, with history expert Dylan Almendral discussing the prohibition-era raids and political scandals.

Other topics included in this fascinating free presentation include Orange County’s vote to proclaim the entire county dry in 1900; prohibition’s effect on Orange County; what types of alcohol were available in the OC at the time and where could you purchase them; and what were the penalties for first-time and repeat offenders.

Enjoy a glass of wine and learn some fun and surprising trivia facts about life in Orange County 100 years ago. To RSVP, contact libreference@cityofmissionviejo.org or 949-830-7100, ext. 5105.
