Be prepared for Tropical Storm Hilary

Tropical Storm Hilary is expected to bring heavy rain and wind to our area this weekend through Monday.

Hilary is currently projected to make landfall in Baja California on Sunday and move northward as a tropical storm near San Diego and across the deserts, mountains and inland. According to the National Weather Service, Orange County can expect rainfall amounts from 2.5 to 3 inches with up to .75 inches per hour and sustained winds up to 35 mph with possible gusts up to 55-60 mph.

In preparation for Tropical Storm Hilary, Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) will staff swift water and strike teams, extra paramedic rescuers on both OCFA helicopters, a hand crew as well as 24-hour dozers from Sunday until Tuesday morning. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is also on high alert.

Mission Viejo residents are reminded to register for AlertOC, a mass notification system designed to keep residents and business informed of emergencies that may require immediate lifesaving actions.

Sandbags – while supplies last – are available at the south end of the Mission Viejo Civic Center parking lot at 200 Civic Center. Some OCFA fire stations, including Station 56 in Rancho Mission Viejo and Station 18 in Trabuco Canyon, have sand and sandbags available for the public. Residents are encouraged to bring their own shovel, and crews may or may not be onsite to assist in filling sandbags. Limited supply based on demand and availability. Remember to stay off the roads if possible and always stay away from floodwaters. If you must drive and you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and go another way.  Follow evacuation routes and do not try to take shortcuts because they may be blocked.

For emergencies, call 911. Non-emergencies should be directed to 949-770-6011. Be sure to follow local response agencies on social media – City of Mission Viejo; Mission Viejo Police Services; Orange County Sheriff’s Department; OCFA; and Southern California Red Cross for up-to-date information.
