From music and art to knitting and the principals of design, the Potocki Center for the Arts hosts classes designed to tap your creative side. Here’s the lineup for September:
Beginning Ukulele
Just one strum of the ukulele brings on a smile. Bring your ukulele and enjoy learning to play the world’s easiest string instrument in a supportive small-group setting. Cost is $99 for age 10 and older. The class is from 6-7 pm on Fridays from September 13 to October 11. (Course #39257)
Beginning Guitar
Enjoy learning to play easy cords, fun melodies, strum styles and many popular tunes in a small, supportive group environment. Bring your own guitar and have fun! Cost is $99 for age 10 and older. The class is from 7-8 pm Friday, September 13 to October 11. (Course #39257)
Let’s Play Music
Fun piano-prep music theory course focusing on experiencing music through solfege hand signs, folk songs, games, imagination and creativity! Cost is $340 plus an $88 material fee due to the instructor for ages 4-6. This class is from 5-5:45 pm on Tuesdays from September 10 to December 17. Knitting for Kids
This entry-level class will get kids started knitting. It covers casting on, knitting and binding off. All supplies provided. Cost is $40 plus a $15 material fee due to the instructor for ages 10-16. It takes place from 1-3 pm on Saturdays from September 21-28. (Course #40343)
Knitting Project Class: Knitted Cactus
Knit your own adorable cactus! Students should be comfortable with the knit stitch. Class covers knitting in the round, combining stitches and finishing skills using double-pointed needles. Cost is $40 plus a $15 material fee due to the instructor for age 12 and older. This class is offered from 11 am to 1 pm every Thursday from September 19-26. (Course #40346)
Knitting Project Class: Knitted Pumpkins
Learn to knit your own pumpkin! Students should be comfortable with the knit stitch. Class covers knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing and finishing skills using double-pointed needles. Cost is $45 plus a $15 material fee due to the instructor for age 12 and older. This class is offered from 6-8:30 pm every Thursday from September 19-26. (Course #40348)
Geode & Gem “Pulp-Stone” Pendant Workshop
Create stunning, one-of-a-kind wearable works of art using recycled paper “Pulp Stones” and colorful glass crystals. These realistic yet fantastical geode or gem-style pendants are lightweight, beautiful and sure to impress. All supplies provided, just bring your imagination. Cost is $35 plus a $10 material fee due to the instructor for age 8 and older. The class is from 10 am to noon on Monday, September 16. (Course #39268)
Intro to Lapidary: Stone Pendants
Learn to use a professional flat lapidary equipment to shape, sand and polish a rough semi-precious stone (lapis azuli, agate, jasper, etc.) into a beautiful gem pendant. Cost is $40 plus a $15 material fee due to the instructor for age 16 and older. This class is from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday, September 14. (Course #39270)
Digital Photography 101 with George Katzenburger
Learn digital photography-menus, resolution, ISO, shutter and more. You will learn how to shoot portraits, sports and night scenes. Bring your camera and its manual. Cost is $70 for age 16 and older. This class is from 6-9 pm on Tuesdays from September 3 to October 8. (Course #40353)
Beginning Portraiture
Learn the basics of portrait drawing using charcoal and pencil. All supplies are provided. Cost is $80 plus a $15 material fee due to the instructor for age 14 and older. This class is from 5-7 pm on Mondays from September 9-30. (Course #40332)
Art for Kids
Kids will experience the joy of creativity while learning the basics of painting. They will explore different mediums such as colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, acrylics and charcoals. Cost is $150 plus a $15 material fee due to the instructor for ages 5-12. This class is from 10-11:30 am on Tuesdays from September 3 to October 22. Basic Elements & Principles of Design
Learn the elements of design and color and how to use them effectively. Cost is $90 plus a $35 textbook and material fee due to the instructor for age 13 and older. This class is from 6-8 pm on Thursdays from September 5 to October 10. (Course #40302)
Still-Life and Landscape Oil Painting
Learn how to translate a photograph into a compelling painting and set-up and compose subjects for a still-life painting. Artist Ebrahim Amin will demonstrate his style and process of painting. Cost is $160 for age 14 and older. This class is from 1-4 pm on Wednesdays from September 25 to October 30. (Course #40433)
The Influence of Color
Learn how colors evoke reactions using lighting, clothing, art and photography, room and other surrounding colors. Experience your own emotional reaction to light color changes. Cost is $35 plus a $5 material fee due to the instructor. This class is from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, September 17. (Course #40316)
Mandala Art with Acrylic Paint
Paint your own mandala with acrylic paint on a 12-inch canvas panel. Learn easy techniques to paint a background, shade for dimension and add some bling. No art experience required. Cost is $40 plus a $10 material fee due to the instructor for age 12 and older. This class is from 9 am to noon on Tuesday, September 24. (Course #40429)

Learn simple design, layout and shading techniques to create a vibrant 8-inch square mandala with colored pencils on black paper. No art experience required.
