City Council to discuss drowning prevention, recognize children’s mental health awareness on May 9 agenda

council chamber

The City Council on Tuesday, May 9 will receive a presentation about drowning prevention and proclaim Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, among other business.

The business portion of the meeting starts at 6 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.

To help bring awareness of water safety, the Council will proclaim the months of May through August as Drowning Prevention Awareness Months. In California, drowning is the leading cause of death and disability for children under five, and for every child who dies from drowning, another seven receive emergency care for non-fatal submersion injuries.

According to the Extraordinary Lives Foundation, about one in five young people now suffer from a mental illness. The Council will proclaim May 7-13 to be Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week in recognition that addressing the emotional and mental health needs of children and youth today is fundamental to the future. In keeping with this awareness, an Art of Well-being exhibit is currently on display at the Potocki Center for the Arts showcasing artworks that offer a unique perspective on how creativity is linked to mental and emotional well-being.

City Council meetings are streamed live on the City’s website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting, sign up for the City's eNewsletter and follow the City's official social media sites for the most accurate, up-to-date information.
