Command performance for Mission Viejo resident in 2nd annual Adult Spelling Bee

More than 60 people gathered in the City Council Chamber on July 14 to witness 20 individuals try their luck in the City’s 2nd annual Adult Spelling Bee.

The contest went 18 rounds before a winner was named. Debi Blohm, an escrow officer who moved to Mission Viejo in 2007, won after correctly spelling denouement. This was her second straight victory after clinching the title in last year’s inaugural event for spelling Fahrenheit.

Craig Hayward followed in second, and Jeremy Hall who only signed up the day before, came in third.  All winners this year live in Mission Viejo. Contestants covered the age spectrum – with the oldest being a woman in her 80s.

“Boy, could she spell,” said librarian Lulu Hallenbeck.  “She lasted until the 12th round!”

Along with the chance to earn forever bragging rights, contestants and audience members alike were treated to music by librarian Jeff Price’s No Name Brass Quintet and a wine and beer reception hosted by the Friends of the Library.

Stay tuned for information about the 2018 Adult Spelling Bee next spring.

That was a fun and unique event for the city/library to host. Thanks to Lulu and her team! There were MANY great spellers that day. We'll have a fine turnout for the 3rd annual. Hope next year the word gets out a little better. Loved Jeff's quintet. Really nice way to wait for the event to begin.
