Council held a moment of silence to honor victims of horrific tragedies near and far

council meeting

The City Council on Tuesday ended its meeting with a moment of silence to honor the many lives tragically lost to gun violence. That included the victims of the horrific tragedies in Uvalde, Texas; Buffalo, New York; and in our South County community of Laguna Woods where Dr. John Cheng gave his life to save others.

Mayor Wendy Bucknum reflected on how this community is mourning the victims lost to senseless acts of violence.

During City Manager Dennis Wilberg's report, there was discussion about local houses of worship, our schools and security measures for last weekend's triathlon.

In other Council news, Council Members adopted an update to the Economic Development Element of the City's General Plan but nixed a proposal which would have explored the future consideration of permitting medical cannabis facilities in Mission Viejo.

In addition, the new annual agreement for law enforcement services from the Orange County Sheriff's Department was approved unanimously, and Council Members received a moving presentation from Orange County Fire Authority Battalion 7 Chief Todd Downing about drowning prevention awareness and a recent incident.

Another presentation on Tuesday focused on our Animal Services team led by Director Michelle Claud-Clemente and featured some furry friends.

The City Council meets at 6 pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center. Meetings are streamed live on the City's website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the City's eNewsletter and follow the City's official social media sites for the most accurate, up-to-date information.
