The City Council on October 12 will consider the City's Housing Element update, among other business items. The meeting starts at 6 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.

Cities are required by State law to prepare a Housing Element every eight years to plan for the city's existing and projected housing needs - including its share of the Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA).

The Housing Element must identify adequate sites for this housing and contain an "inventory" of land suitable for residential development including vacant sites and sites having potential for redevelopment.

The City's current Housing Element was last updated in 2013. Staff is preparing a Housing Element update required by State law to address California's 6th housing cycle covering the years 2021-2029. The City's fair share of RHNA is 2,217 housing units, including 1,075 lower-income units. This final RHNA number was adopted by the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) on March 22.

The City has vastly engaged the community on the required update through a joint City Council Commission meeting in March; Planning and Transportation Commission meeting in May; and two City Council meetings. Most recently, the matter was considered by the Planning and Transportation Commission meeting on September 27.
