Don’t miss a screening of “The Miracle Worker” on Sunday, April 16 as part of the free movies of character series.

Hosted by Mission Viejo’s Community of Character Committee, the screening starts at 1:15 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.

The movie tells the story of young Helen Keller. Blind, deaf, and mute since infancy, Helen is in danger of being sent to an institution, and her inability to communicate left her frustrated and violent. In desperation, Helen’s parents seek help from the Perkins Institute, which sends them a "half-blind Yankee schoolgirl" named Annie Sullivan to tutor their daughter. Through persistence and love, and sheer stubbornness, Annie breaks through Helen's walls of silence and darkness and teaches her to communicate.

Released in 1962, â€œThe Miracle Worker” earned Anne Bancroft (Annie Sullivan) and Patty Duke (Helen Keller) Academy Awards for best actress and supporting actress, respectively. This classic also garnered other Oscar nominations including Best Director (Arthur Penn).
