Free screening of Movie of Character this Sunday
Don't miss the screening of "In the Heights" during the Mission Viejo Community of Character Committee's free movie event at 1:15 pm on Sunday, October 16 in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.
"In the Heights" is a 2021 musical drama film directed by Jon M. Chu ("Crazy Rich Asians") from a screenplay by Quiara AlegrÃa Hudes that is based on the stage musical by Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda ("Hamilton"). Throughout the musical, the Latin rhythms and styles of Salsa, Merengue and Samba are heard to reflect the many cultures that come together.
The movie centers on characters living in the neighborhood of Washington Heights on the northern tip of Manhattan. At the center of the show is Usnavi, a bodega owner who looks after the aging Cuban lady next door and pines for the gorgeous girl working in the neighboring beauty salon. He dreams of winning the lottery and escaping to the shores of his native Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Nina, a childhood friend of Usnavi's, has returned to the neighborhood from her first year at college with surprising news for her parents, who have spent their life savings on building a better future for their daughter. Ultimately, Usnavi and the residents of the close-knit neighborhood get a dose of what it means to be home. This film is a celebration of culture, community, and love.
