Mission Viejo police unit struck by wrong-way driver

A Mission Viejo sergeant is OK after a wrong-way driver hit and totaled his police vehicle Sunday night.

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. while the sergeant was heading northbound on Trabuco Road between Alicia and Los Alisos. He suddenly swerved right to avoid a head-on collision with an elderly motorist driving on the wrong side of the road. The driver clipped the left side of the patrol unit, causing it to spin out of control and land about 100 feet from impact on the east sidewalk of Trabuco Road.

The Orange County Fire Authority examined both drivers who had no visible injuries.
