Mission Viejo Veterans of the Year Gilbert Calderon Castro and Carlia Oldfather will be recognized with local veterans during the City’s annual Veterans Day celebration at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 11 at the Norman P. Murray Community Center.

The public ceremony includes comments by Colonel Chris Griffin, commanding officer of the Headquarters Battalion of the 1st Marine Division, and retired Sergeant Juan Valdez along with a color guard, rifle salute and taps. The event also features a vocal performance by Staff Sergeant Rachel Bartlett Walters.

A dessert reception follows the ceremony. Guests will have the chance to learn about the POW/ MIA memorial table; interact with members of the City’s Marine Adoption Committee and VFW Auxiliary Post 6024; enjoy entertainment by Community Outreach Alliance (COA); and create thank-you cards for the military compliments of Viejo Elementary.   Separate programming is also available for children with special needs through the City’s new SNAP (Special Needs Adaptive Programming) Initiative.
