This month’s Free Movie of Character will screen at Norman P. Murray Center
Mark your calendar for a free screening of the dramatic film "Hidden Figures" on Sunday, July 16 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center.
Sponsored by the Mission Viejo Community of Character Committee, the film presentation starts at 2 p.m. and coincides with Mission Viejo's July character trait of “fairness.â€
"Hidden Figures" is a 2016 biographical film that tells the role African-American women played in the space program in the early 1960s. These women faced racial prejudice and gender discrimination but still played a vital part in the NASA space program as mathematicians and engineers. The film takes places in Virginia, which was still largely segregated at the time and where women were sometimes treated as second-class citizens. The film was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top 10 films of 2016 and was nominated for numerous awards, including three Oscar nominations (Best Picture, Best Adapted Screen Play and Best Supporting Actress) and two Golden Globes.
The film is rated PG and may not be appropriate for younger children. Following the movie is a brief discussion regarding how the film relates to “fairness.â€
This is the first time a Movie of Character will be shown at the community center, so make plans to head to 24932 Veterans Way on July 16.
