Authorities confirm mountain lion sighting in Mission Viejo

Mountain lion

The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center has confirmed reports of a mountain lion sighting near the crossing of Marguerite Parkway and Alicia Parkway near Lake Mission Viejo. The center received reports that after 45 minutes without any incident, the lion swam across the lake toward the Mollorca Condominium Community. (Mountain lions can swim but do not like to and will only do so if absolutely necessary.) Mountain lions hunt deer, which live in the surrounding area as well as coyotes, raccoons, skunks, opossums, rodents, rabbits, etc. They do not typically prey on domestic animals unless an opportunity arises and are solitary, elusive and usually avoid humans as much as possible.

Stay safer by remembering to:

  • Be aware.
  • Don't walk alone, bring a friend.
  • Wear bright and highly contrasting clothing.
  • Watch for signs and trail postings.
  • Avoid jogging or mountain biking in low light conditions at dusk and dawn.
  • Stay on the trail.
  • Supervise children, and keep them within arm's reach.
  • Keep pets on a secure leash.
  • Keep pets indoors.
  • Don't approach any wild animal.
  • Give wildlife the time and space to steer clear of you.
  • Try to look as large as you can and do not crouch down if you see a mountain lion.

Mountain lions are helpful in maintaining order in our ecosystem and assist to keep other wildlife numbers in check. If you see a mountain lion, report the sighting immediately to Mission Viejo Animal Services at 949-470-3045 or the Orange County Sheriff's Department at 949-770-6011.

Hello Private,
If you are scared for you, a pet, or a child possibly you should move somewhere where there are not mountain lions. No , you moved here near wilderness and now have a problem with wildlife! Well I do not. I have lived near wilderness for 20 some years, and have had it with the wild animals getting killed due to people’s ignorance and selfishness. In closing, leave if your scared or shut up and deal. The wild animals were here first.
