New reading program for kids will cultivate academic & career success

The Mission Viejo Library is rolling out a new reading program for young children – 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten!

Geared to youngsters from ages 0-6, the 1,000 Books program is a nationwide initiative designed to foster essential reading habits from the get-go, since children who are read to at home are better prepared for school and continue to excel throughout their academic careers.

The program is meant to nurture a habit of parents and caregivers reading to their children regularly over a span of multiple years. Therefore, the goal of 1,000 books is a substantial but not insurmountable achievement.

Here’s how to participate:

  • Registration and book logging is done via Beanstack (https://cmvl.beanstack.org). Parents must create a Beanstack account and add a profile for their reader.
  • Readers earn badges they can redeem for real-life prizes at the Mission Viejo Library. They earn a treasure-chest item for every 100 books completed and School Supply Kit when they’ve reached 1,000 books. They can also have their name on our 1,000 Books Wall of Fame, which will adorn the children’s area of the library.

So, get started today in planting a seed to grow lifelong readers. For more information, call 949-470-3061.
