Santa Ana winds will bring high fire danger, potential blackouts this weekend

Gusty Santa Ana winds will develop tonight into Friday morning with low humidity, resulting in high fire danger and Red Flag warnings.

A second burst of Santa Ana winds is likely Sunday and Monday. A Red Flag warning means critical fire weather conditions are either happening now or will soon. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire potential and erratic fire behavior. 

Residents are urged to be aware of their surrounding conditions and avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting or campfires and follow local fire restrictions. High winds can also cause localized power outages and wind-driven debris.  Remember to have an emergency plan in place, emergency preparedness kits at home and vehicles full of fuel. Because of the projected extreme fire conditions, Southern California Edison is exploring options for a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff of electrical circuits in high-fire risk areas (Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, Rancho Santa Margarita and Trabuco Canyon) as early as tonight through Friday.
