Don't miss bestselling author discussing the remarkable history of Benjamin Rush in free Writers Present program Nov. 17
Mark your calendar for Sunday, November 17 when bestselling author Stephen Fried presents his astounding book "Rush" beginning at 3 pm at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center.
A 2019 George Washington Book Prize Finalist and American Library Association Notable Book of the Year, "Rush" is based on the monumental life of Benjamin Rush - a medical pioneer and one of our most provocative and unsung Founding Fathers. By the time he was 30, Dr. Benjamin Rush had signed the Declaration of Independence, toured Europe as Benjamin Franklin's protégé, edited "Common Sense" and served as John Adams's confidant. As with the greatest Revolutionary minds, Rush was only just beginning his role in 1776 in the American experiment. As the new republic coalesced, he became a visionary writer and reformer; a medical innovator whose insights and reforms revolutionized the treatment of mental illness; an opponent of slavery and prejudice by race, religion, or gender; an adviser to and often the physician of America's first leaders; and "the American Hippocrates."
Rush reveals his singular life and towering legacy, installing him in the pantheon of our wisest and boldest Founding Fathers.
Stephen Fried is an award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author who teaches at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the University of Pennsylvania. He penned the historical biography "Appetite for America" and coauthored "A Common Struggle" with Congressman Patrick Kennedy.
