'Gandhi' is May's movie of character

The public is invited to a screening of the classic film "Gandhi" at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 21 at Mission Viejo City Hall.

Sponsored by the Mission Viejo Community of Character Committee, the film coincides with Mission Viejo's May character trait of moral courage.

Gandhi is a 1982 epic biographical film, which dramatizes the life of Mohatmas Gandhi, the leader of India's non-violent independence movement against the United Kingdom's rule of the country during the 20th century.  Using Satyagraha (insistence on truth) Gandhi mounts a non-violent campaign of unprecedented scale, coordinating millions of Indians nationwide.  The movement resulted in Great Britain finally granting independence to India in 1947.  Mohatmas Gandhi had a profound influence on Martin Luther King Jr., the leader of the American Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

"Gandhi" was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1982 and won eight including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Ben Kingsley).

The film is rated PG and high school students studying world history are encouraged to attend.

The film will be shown on a theater-size screen with theater-style seating and surround-sound at 200 Civic Center, just across from the Mission Viejo Library.  History teacher Bob Hayes will host a post-film discussion.
