Library rolls out new virtual program lineup for kids: Virtual Reading Rocks!

The Mission Viejo Library is rolling out a new virtual program lineup for kids: Virtual Reading Rocks!

Designed for elementary school-aged children who can read aloud, this monthly program, which starts September 24, supports literacy and builds community. Hosted on Zoom and facilitated by a librarian, readers age 6 and older will take turns reading aloud to friendly teen volunteers.

Participants – with gentle encouragement from teen volunteers and librarians – will increase their reading fluency, improve inflection and expression and expand their vocabulary. Each session in this confidence-building program will also include time for show-and-tell to help strengthen kids’ public speaking and conversation skills.

This program was originally developed last year in partnership with the library by local Girl Scout Kaitlyn Scanlon for her Gold Award project, and Mission Viejo’s librarians are excited to continue working with her to bring this popular program to a virtual platform.

“It’s a great way to bring kids and teens together to encourage reading -- the kids really look up to the teens, and mentoring young readers is such a positive experience for the teens,” said Senior Children’s Librarian Allison Tran.

Virtual Reading Rocks kicks off at 3:30 pm on Thursday, September 24, and registration is required. Email libraryprograms@cityofmissionviejo.org to sign up and get your Zoom invitation.
