City working to safely reopen recreation facilities October 5 under state and local COVID-19 guidelines

The City’s Montanoso and Sierra Recreation Centers are gearing up to reopen to the public on October 5 in accordance with the recently issued state guidelines.

The City of Mission Viejo continues to follow evolving state and local guidelines under the statewide emergency order and has been proactively modifying reopening plans to comply with the new guidelines to ensure patrons remain safe. In anticipation of the October 5 reopening date, the City updated its custodial agreements, staffing schedules and safety measures to welcome members back.

The facilities will reopen with COVID-19 procedures and modified operating hours listed at this link. Along with the modified hours, the gyms will close periodically during the day for additional equipment cleaning on top of the increased sanitizing that City staff will conduct each hour.

“With Orange County’s move into the red tier giving us the opportunity to reopen our recreation facilities with proper COVID-19 procedures and safety measures in place, we are excited about our members returning and complementing their health, wellness and fitness goals,” said Recreation and Community Services Director Mark Nix.

Excited about the recreation center’s reopening. I’m wondering if it will be necessary to make appointments to use the Sierra Recreational Center’s gym?

Great for the City.

Question: Did you have to increase your staffing for these re-openings in order to comply with our current Covid-19 State mandates?
Thank you

Would very much like to register for yoga classes. Before the pandemic I attended yoga classes at Montanoso Mondays and Wednesday’s at 10:45am. I’ve tried to find these classes online to no avail. Thanks for your help.

No reservations are necessary to use the gym and usage will be based on a first come first serve policy until capacity is hit. Patrons may have to wait briefly until someone leaves before they can enter the gym. If preferred, members can call the recreation center to determine facility usage before heading down

The Recreation and Community Services Department has not hired any additional staff since March to operate our recreational facilities. We have adapted to the new guidelines using existing staff.

Sounds like our wonderful city is taking all the necessary steps to reopen our facilities one-by-by responsibly for those of us that have and continue to partake in them. But unfortunately almost ALL city meetings continue to not receive this same priority of importance to us. Do appointments need to be made ahead of time with health clearance or do myself and others need to speak up more for having our property taxes raised so the funding would be there for whatever additional adequate health protection that may be needed in the future for simple in-person public attendance (especially by now at this point)? It’s really not asking too much to announce for a change for public attendance (as of my post oct 7) that the city can definitely make it possible for our next council meeting to be done in the city chambers (WITH public attendance) that includes health guidances and health protections. I’m sorry if I may be wrong..... I may not have gotten “the memo” about most members and senior council staff that may have been looking forward to early retirement of public service because of this continued and easily-questionable decision making.
