Mission Viejo's Firefighter of the Year is Thomas Olvera

OCFA Tommy Olvera

Thomas Olvera has been named the Orange County Fire Authority's Mission Viejo Employee of the Year.

A 14-year veteran of the department, Firefighter Olvera has been assigned to our City for the last four years.

As a technical rescue technician and paramedic at Fire Station 9, Firefighter Olvera is charged with fighting all types of fires - structure and wildfires - and performing boat, helicopter, swift water, building collapse, large animal and other kinds of rescues. He also provides medical aid as a paramedic.

"His vast skill level is almost unmatched in the fire service," said his supervisor Fire Captain Tony Duchi.

Despite his proficiency, Firefighter Olvera expanded his knowledge this year by qualifying to serve as a helicopter-based rescuer, and he spent six months as a member of OCFA's elite helicopter rescuer program. If that weren't enough, he also qualified as a John Wayne Airport rescue firefighter and is certified to operate the aircraft rescue crane - a role requiring much skill.

"Thomas has gone far above what is required of him per his job description "¦ he is always looking to improve himself and his skillset, and if he isn't taking classes, then he is teaching," Fire Captain Duchi said. "In addition, he finds time to volunteer for the OCFA Pipes and Drums band, playing the tenor drum and serving as the band's secretary."

Thomas Olvera YOU are EXCEPTIONAL!!!
THANK YOU for serving our communities with the highest of standards and knowledge. We are so proud to know you are there for us in Mission Viejo. I only wish we could build you a better firehouse there next to Post Office and mall. :)
