City Council’s Dec. 14 meeting includes District-Based Voting, State of the City and important improvement projects

council chamber

The City Council on December 14 will host its first public hearing on district-based voting and will consider awarding a contract for the La Paz Bridge Rehabilitation and Road Widening Improvements as well as proposed improvements at the Montanoso Recreation Center.

During the meeting, which starts at 6 pm, Mayor Trish Kelley’s State of the City video will also premiere touching on the City’s challenges and accomplishments of 2021.

The public hearing on District-Based Voting will include a detailed presentation by the Center for Demographic Research at California State University, Fullerton that will present data and findings of the center’s demographic analysis of the City.

Council Members will consider awarding a roughly $13 million contract for the La Paz Bridge Rehabilitation and Road Widening Improvements project. Project funding is provided from a federal grant program, Measure M2 Arterial Capacity Enhancement grant from OCTA, and a reimbursement from Moulton Niguel Water District. The 0.2-mile stretch between Muirlands Boulevard and Chrisanta Drive, which carries about 36,000 vehicles a day, was Mission Viejo’s original entry, and the bridges over the railroad tracks were constructed more than six decades ago in 1960.

In addition, the Council will consider giving staff the green light to advertise bids for the much-needed Montanoso Recreation Center Rehabilitation project. The last substantial renovation to the pool area was done in 2003. Over the last 18 years, the pool plaster has deteriorated, and pool equipment has started to fail and become less energy efficient. The surrounding pool deck has also become cracked and damaged and needs maintenance and repair. Staff is seeking City Council authorization to approve the construction documents and seek bids for the replastering of the pool as well as the spa and replacement of the pool mechanical equipment.

The City Council agenda will be posted by 5 pm Friday, December 10 at this link.

Residents are encouraged to attend Council meetings, which take place in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center. The meetings are streamed live and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99.

Is it true about a High density 6 story apartment complex on the corner or La Paz & Marguerite.

If so I am opposed. The traffic on La Paz going both ways is already impossible to navigate. You have 5 schools within 5 blocks.
I live above city hall and the nigh traffic noise is unbearable. Delivery trucks for the markets at 3 am. Cars without exhaust racing up the streets at all house.. Then the motorcycles that you can hear for miles.

This was supposed to be a quiet home community.

No, I am so opposed. to the idea of 600 more cars..

I will be attending tonight's Council meeting and I understand you will also discuss the proposed project on the Marguerite and La Paz corner.

There is information being distributed and probably all of it is not correct but I definitely oppose this center being turned into apartments. The traffic down La Paz to the freeway is already bumper to bumper. The City needs to please the residents of Mission Viejo - not Developers.

I am a home owner and have lived in Mission Viejo since 1964.
