The cycling community is rallying to honor the life and contributions of Dr. Michael Mammone who was tragically killed in Dana Point last month.

With support from Providence Mission Hospital Foundation, a celebration of life and ride in Dr. Mammone’s memory will take place on Saturday, March 18 at the Leonard Cancer Institute at Mission Hospital, 27799 Medical Center Road.

Along with honoring the life of this amazing emergency physician who worked at Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach and Mission Viejo, the event will focus on bicycle safety with presentations by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and OC Fire Authority.

Cycling groups of all sizes are encouraged to ride to the event that begins at 11 am. Groups should plan their own independent rides and converge at the event, which is expected to end around noon.

Free armbands (optional) to wear on the ride can be picked up at Rock n Road Cyclery (all four Orange County locations) and Specialized of Costa Mesa before Saturday.

For people who want to attend without riding to the event, free parking will be provided on the first three levels with the rooftop level reserved for standing room only attendance.

We need legislation that protects cyclists and penalizes those who do not follow the laws to share the road. And we need to make hit and run a more serious offense for the criminal who commits it. California statistics are horrific. And if e-bikes can’t follow the laws, maybe bicycles of all types may need licensing for enforcement.
