Town Hall Meeting January 7 will focus on SDG&E's soaring power rates
The City of Mission Viejo will host a Town Hall meeting on Monday, January 7 to discuss the surging power bills residents are facing from San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).
The meeting is from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Council Chamber at Mission Viejo City Hall, 200 Civic Center.
At issue is the skyrocketing rates SDG&E continues to charge customers, which are substantially higher than electricity rates charged by Southern California Edison (SCE).
The Town Hall will focus on the pressure the City has applied on the utility; the sole administrative body in the state that controls utility rates; and what citizens can do to try and mitigate the situation.

What citizens can do about soaring rates is not what I want to hear.
I want to hear how M.V. can switch from SDGE to SCE.

I will be interested to hear if there are any solutions to this continuing problem.

California Public Utilities…
California Public Utilities Commision (CPUC), the same people that attempted to tax our texts, are responsible for approving SDGE rate hikes. They are hired and fired by the governor. Maybe we should be complaining, writing, protesting these people. Looking forward to our town meeting.

To tag onto Mr Dwyer’s comment, I would like to know WHY the city is split between the two utility companies.
If we are stuck with SDG&E, then an explanation on WHY we are being charged “Coastal” rates would be in order.

My family and all my neighbors I've talked with all agree with Eileen Roth. How can we stop being the red headed step child and get rid of SDG&E? Going to CPUC for help has proven to be useless. They are about as good as a 2 dollar steak. We are a city full of smart and intelligent people, there has to be some other angle we can look into to solve this. Can we hire a Lobbyist to make things change? Can we talk to SCE to see what options we have to join them? Even if it's a long process, the sooner we start, the sooner it's over.

Thank you for your comments. At the Town Hall Meeting on January 7, there will be many topics of discussion regarding SDG&E and you may find answers to your concerns. If you are unable to attend, there will be an audio recording of the meeting available.

I live in the unincorporated part of Trabuco Canyon and we face the same problems with SDG&E. I am sure our residents would love to join forces with Mission Viejo residents impacted by these coastal rates.

I would like to know how the push to solar is impacting our rates especially for those who have not installed solar panels. It occurs to me that as utilities lose revenue because of solar they need to make it up somehow to support infrastructure and maybe that is by raising rates.

I can't attend the meeting, please distribute any pertinent information or plan of action. I have been calling the CPUC public comment line every time I receive notices of SDG&E or Gas Co. rate increase requests. It hasn't done any good. I appreciate the city's involvement, it's clear to me that the CPUC isn't responsive to individual citizens request to halt rate increases.

Regarding Ralph's comment. I work for the industry leader in solar and whole home battery back-up and It's SDG&E's rate increases that have driven so many people to solar, not the cause of the rate hikes. Solar sill only accounts less than 5% of homes in CA. The rationale for their increases are submitted to the CPUC and it usually comes down to fire damages to equipment ongoing upgrades to the old technology and grid infrastructure and the cost of maintaining the grid and power lines crossing the desert as well as investment in newer infrastructure to meet state mandates for renewable energy.
