Stay up to date on the I-5 Widening Project

Freeway

Today, nearly 360,000 motorists travel I-5 daily between the San Joaquin Hills Toll Road (SR-73) and El Toro Road. Transportation planners expect traffic volumes to grow 25 percent by 2045. To address this travel demand, OCTA and Caltrans are working together to implement the San Diego Freeway (I-5) Widening project from SR-73 to El Toro Road.

Located adjacent to the cities of Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills and Laguna Niguel, this $580 million freeway improvement project was approved by Orange County voters in November 2006. Once construction begins, the project will be built in three segments and include numerous roadway, structural and operational improvements.

Resident can stay up to date on the widening project online or get further information by calling 714-560-5306 or 714-560-5573.

Instead, we should be calling for the toll roads to be free, as promised. The date they said they would be free has long come and gone. We have roads in place to elevate traffic. $600 million does not need to be spent.

Hope the proposed project would alleviate the S/B traffic congestion at Alicia PKWY. Need to extend the aux lane between El Toro and Alicia through the Alicia Interchange to join the aux lane between Alicia and Lapaz. Caltrans proposed this improvement more than 15 years ago but was environmentally blocked (what a shame). It was simply a "punching through" lane that could have significant impact on the traffic flow on the S/B upstream of Alicia.

The funds were approved in 2006?? And they haven't started it yet? It's 2019! Good luck, commuters! And don't hold your breath.
