City of Mission Viejo canceling or postponing upcoming public events

City of Mission Viejo Seal

In light of the latest directives from the California Department of Public Health to protect public health and slow the rate of transmission of COVID-19, the City of Mission Viejo is canceling or postponing several upcoming events.

The state department’s new directives call for canceling or postponing – for at least the remainder of March – all large gatherings that include 250 people such as concerts, conferences, and professional, college and school sporting events. The recommendations also include postponing or canceling smaller gatherings held in venues like crowded auditoriums, rooms or other venues that do not allow social distancing of six feet per person.

Therefore, the City of Mission Viejo is canceling or postponing all events that fall within the directives including the Irish Festival; South Orange County Open Track and Field Meet; Lord of the Strings; Bee's Knees Speakeasy & Swing Dance; Wine Tasting & Music; Film of Character; Junior Olympics at our Aquatics Complex; Mission Viejo Library Comic Fest; and all other non-essential events and activities at City facilities at the discretion of City administrators.

According to the Department of Public Health, the timely implementation of aggressive strategies that create social distance and those that reduce close contact of people not regularly together, including limiting gatherings, has proven effective in prior pandemics at delaying rates of transmission and reducing illness and death.

City administrators attend all COVID-19 county briefings, and the City is following recommendations of the Orange County Healthcare Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The OCHCA posts the latest information on the county website at this link.

The City will continue to relay information from the county via our eNewsletter, social media sites (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Nextdoor) and news page.

For now (March 13) the library is remaining open, however, we are spacing seating to allow for more social distancing in the building and encouraging people to follow the guidelines provided by the Orange County Health Care Agency for social distancing and preventing the spread of COVID-19. We are putting plans in place in case of further direction that leads to closure. We have cancelled all library programs, events, and meetings through the end of March, and the Friends of the Library bookstore will be closed during that time as well. Passport service have been suspended, although we will honor existing appointments.

We encourage library patrons to take advantage of our services that are remotely available, such as downloadable books, audio books, and magazines available from the library website: https://cityofmissionviejo.org/departments/library/research-reading-res….

We also have a number of online research resources, and have staff ready to assist with questions via phone 949-830-7100 or email libadultref@cityofmissionviejo.org. If you have holds that are likely to come in soon, you can suspend them until you are ready to visit the library again. This feature is accessed under the “My Account” tab in the Library catalog, or you can call and a staff member can assist you with this over the phone.

How about classes like children's Karate on Tuesdays and Fridays at the Montanoso Recreation Center, is that going to be cancelled?

Thank you,
