Where residents are required to wear face coverings

With the different directives being issued as California slowly reopens, the City of Mission Viejo is reminding residents where face coverings are required.

Face coverings are required anywhere you come within 6 feet of others who don’t live in your household. That includes the following:

  • Waiting in line to go inside a store
  • Shopping in a store
  • Waiting for or riding on public transportation
  • Riding in a taxi or other ride-service vehicle
  • Seeking health care
  • Going into facilities that can stay open
  • While at work
  • When at the beach or an outdoor museum

I work at Target Mission Viejo North. About 20% of shoppers do not wear masks. I find this unnerving and now realize that masks are required but does that mean the same as mandatory? I know that Aliso Viejo has a mandatory mask requirement and I think Mission Viejo should too if “required” is not enforceable. Thank you.

County directives require face coverings whenever people are within 6 feet of one another. Each business is responsible for following State and County healthcare agency orders so you should contact the management to inquire about their policy and/or express your concerns. You can also get further information from the County Healthcare Agency at (800) 564-8448.

Please be careful about judging other people who are NOT wearing a mask in public. Those people may have a medical or psychological issue that prevents them from doing so. It is NOT fair or right for anyone to become the “mask police” when you don’t know another person’s situation. These are difficult times for everyone. Please don’t make it harder by being mean and/or judgmental. We do NOT need anyone to take it upon themselves to “enforce” mask usage on others. Walk in another direction if you see someone without a mask and you are not comfortable.

We are all concerned with our health and safety, but please don't be over judgemental of someone not wearing a mask. I know a few people who can't wear them. As anonymous said, they don't wear them because of trying to be evil, malicious, or refusing to be compliant.

I know of 2 people as of May 27th, which ended up in the E.R because they felt lightheaded while wearing a face-covering against their doctor's orders after a trip to the store.

They both had one thing in common, they both were tired of people at the stores giving them the evil look and making rude comments about them not wearing a mask.

We can't lose our humanity and compassion, and automatically assume the worst of those not wearing a face covering or mask, they have their reasons.

Q: Who is not required to wear a face-covering and where am I not required to wear a face-covering?

A: The face-covering component of the Order does not apply to children under the age of 2; anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the cloth face-covering without assistance; as well as individuals with a medical condition, mental health condition or developmental disability that prevents it.

The CDC recommends that everyone wear cloth face coverings when leaving their homes, regardless of whether they have fever or symptoms of COVID-19. This is because of evidence that people with COVID-19 can spread the disease, even when they don't have any symptoms. Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
