Mission Viejo incumbents re-elected for two more years

Ed Sachs, Greg Raths and Wendy Bucknum

Mission Viejo voters re-elected Council Members Ed Sachs, Greg Raths and Wendy Bucknum to office, according to the "unofficial" election results from the Registrar of Voters.

The Council Members will take the Oath of Office on December 11 to serve two-year terms. All five Mission Viejo City Council seats will be up for re-election in November 2020. During the December 11 meeting, the Council will select a new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem for 2019. Ed Sachs has served as Mayor and Greg Raths as Mayor Pro Tem this year.

The City Council meets at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center. Meetings are streamed live on the City's website and air on Mission Viejo Television.

i was so looking forward to some new, younger ideas on our council. but alas, we are firmly in the choke hold of republicans. yes, i know...city council is SUPPOSED to be bipartisan. good luck with that. but as long as at least one of them has higher aspirations...we may get a new face yet!
sad.

Hi Mission Viejo City Council, can you please explain why Ed Sachs was quoted saying "I was not up for election in 2020. Up for election in 2022. Council members elected for 4 year terms. I was re-elected in 2018. It’s math. People are making you look foolish" ? The Council's vote to keep their seats for 2 more years without a vote is an abhorrent abuse of power and we will not allow it.

Where is the asterisk in this Report to the Public noting that the "City adheres to the rule of law - as the law exists, not as it is wished to be."

So two years later, on 06/23/2020, the Council is going to use "the Law" to justify extending their terms for two years?

Here is the law: Sec. 2.04.140. - Election of members

"City council members shall hold office for hour years from the Monday succeeding the county clerk's certification of the election and until their successors are elected and qualified."

I have to agree with Emily Kelley. This is not only abuse of power, but abuse of authority.

The council failed to perform to the requirements of the Stipulated Judgment; the process was slow-walked; the city attorney was admonished by the Secretary of State.

And now, because the city delayed any action til the very last minute - the voters are suppose to accept the excuses and allow their terms in office be extended for two years?

Where other local governments, including the Board of Supervisors, have opened its chambers to the public, the City of Mission Viejo continues to lock out the public.

It is apparent that this council does not want the voice of the public but will want the public's vote on 11/03/2020.
