Attend Neighborhood Meeting Nov. 8 regarding Athletic Park Field Lighting Improvement Project

park

The City of Mission Viejo Community Services Commission is inviting residents to a special Neighborhood Meeting on Monday, November 8 to learn about the proposed athletic field lighting improvement project at Marty Russo Youth Athletic Park.

Located at 22056 Olympiad Road, the park is home to many baseball and soccer practices, games and tournaments hosting hundreds of young residents and their families each year.  Over the last several years, the City has continued to receive requests from organizations like Little League and AYSO to consider opportunities to increase and replace existing field lighting throughout the park. The lighting improvements will allow the leagues to accommodate needed practice and game schedules, particularly during winter months, while also addressing park visibility and safety.

The Neighborhood Meeting will give residents the chance to learn more, provide input and ask questions. It will take place from 5:30-6:30 pm at Marty Russo Youth Athletic Park behind Field #1.

Folks who are unable to attend the meeting are welcome to share their comments by emailing RCS@cityofmissionviejo.org or calling 949-470-3061. The information gathered will be reviewed at the November 16 Community Services Commission meeting, which begins at 6 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.

As a former AYSO Referee for 25 years in Mission Viejo,I believe that replacing existing lighting on this field would be greatly appreciated by AYSO and Little League Baseball organizations. As it is, we are very limited in outdoor youth parks and this would greatly assist in increased practice or play time for both organizations!

As someone who lives next to the MVHS field and has to live with high beam lights shining into our home, I strongly suggest that an evaluation is done as to the impact to the property by the enhanced lighting. Also make sure that lights are turned off after an event. That is never the case at MVHS for the first 3 months of a school year. The lights continue to shine until 4am. These lights are so bright that there is no way to block the lights for some of the houses along the MVHS parking lot.
