The shredding event lines…
The shredding event lines were too long (wrapped clear around La Paz almost to the Jr. High). The process worked better when it was held at Mission Viejo high School where there were multiple lines.
Did the City get approval…
Did the City get approval for the traffic plan from the OCSD? The traffic back-up was an added hazard for the bicyclists as well as pedestrians at the crosswalks.
The traffic plans were…
Traffic plans were approved by the City's Public Works department. This event was only held at City Hall because the school district is currently not allowing the hosting of community events at the High School due to COVID-19. The trucks hit capacity at 11:15 am which was after the scheduled end of the event, however staff gave every remaining resident in the line the option to leave their documents to be shredded once the shred trucks returned after emptying their loads offsite. Most residents took the City up on that offer and staff stayed till 12:50 pm and ensured that all documents left behind were shredded once the trucks returned.
The next event is tentatively scheduled in the Spring. While there has been a pent up request for shredding from the community, we will take last weekend's event as a lesson learned and will not host any more shred events at the Civic Center. We will continue to try to work with SVUSD to secure the high school for the next event; however, as indicated, that may not be possible so the future of the shred events is unknown at this time.
