City of Mission Viejo has longtime tradition of providing, supporting after-school programs for youth

Mission Viejo students can tap their creative sides, learn about art, music and science and gain assistance with their homework through after-school programs at local schools and City facilities.

Through the City of Mission Viejo's Middle School Enrichment program, students can embrace painting, pottery, art, dance, guitar and other activities at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, Thomas R. Potocki Center and Carl Hankey Middle School.  To better serve the community, the City Council expanded the enrichment program to include La Paz Intermediate and Carl Hankey schools. This low-cost program is part of the City of Mission Viejo's extensive and ongoing efforts to provide students with safe, educational and fun activities after the school bell rings.

Middle school students will have even more options this coming fall through the Mission Viejo YMCA Teen Club at Newhart Middle School. Registration is now available for the program that includes homework tutoring, sports and fitness programs, art, science, photo and engineering clubs, computers, games and other hands-on activities.

For help with homework or school research, students can also take advantage of the after-school tutoring and homework center at the Mission Viejo Library.

These enrichment programs have long been supported and promoted by the Mission Viejo City Council.  In fact, Council members recently approved another 2-year contract with Saddleback Valley Unified School District to continue providing the affordable drop-in Kids' Factory program in Mission Viejo.  For children in grades K-6, Kid's Factory offers supervised recreational activities including arts and crafts, games, activities and sports.

"Our City proudly supports after-school programs, which give kids a chance to find their passion, from sports to music or writing," said Mayor Wendy Bucknum.  "We believe these programs help put young people on the road to success. Whether it's homework help, science learning, opportunities for recreation or paths to higher education, the potential impact of afterschool programs goes far beyond the benefit of providing safe, supervised environments in the hours after school."
