City reminding residents to be prepared for earthquakes, other disasters

alert oc

With recent small earthquakes shaking the Southland, the City of Mission Viejo is reminding residents to be prepared for a larger quake that can strike at any time.

If you haven’t already, be sure to register for our mass-notification system AlertOC. This targeted notification system will alert you when there is an imminent threat to life safety with required actions including evacuation orders. All landline phone numbers are preregistered in the system. You need to register your address, cell phone for calls and text messages, email address, and TDD/TYY devices. You can register multiple addresses, phone numbers, and emails including your home, work, etc.  Simply register your cell phone for calls and texts, email addresses and TDD/TY devices at AlertOC.com

Along with registering for AlertOC, pack emergency and “go” kits to sustain you, your family members and pets for several days without food, water, electricity and other essential items after a disaster.

In the event of an earthquake, unless you are driving, the simple answer if the ground starts to shake is to drop, take cover and hold on. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, drop to the ground in an inside corner of the building and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. Don’t try to run to another room just to get under a table. If in bed, stay there. Hold on until the shaking stops. Protect your head with a pillow.

If outdoors, stay outdoors, as injuries are more likely if you try to move around. Try to stay clear of wires, buildings or anything else that could fall on you. If there’s nothing sturdy to get under, sit until the shaking stops.

If driving, coast to the side of the road, stop and set the parking brake. Avoid bridges and overhead hazards.
