Council to consider important crime and safety measures March 22
The City Council on Tuesday, March 22 will consider different measures to help prevent overdose deaths from the fentanyl crisis as well as thefts skyrocketing throughout the country.
Council Members will consider a resolution of support with the Orange County Board of Supervisors and law enforcement designed to eliminate the threat of fentanyl in our community. Third District Supervisor Don Wagner will be on hand for the presentation and to give an update on the region.
During the meeting, an ordinance will be introduced establishing regulations prohibiting the unlawful possession of catalytic converters in the City. The ordinance would provide Mission Viejo Police Services with an additional tool to deter this type of theft.
In other Council news, City staff will give a presentation about a study for the Core Area Vision Plan that includes site plan and conceptual analysis.
The meeting starts at 6 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center. Meetings are streamed live on the City’s website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. And the Council will also vote, probably on the Consent Calendar, to pass the Ordinance amending the City's election code, extending the terms in office for Trish Kelley and Brian Goodell to November 2024.
A Consent Calendar vote allows passage of all items without public discussion. Will a member of the Council pull the Ordinance off of the Calendar for public discussion?
On November 25, 2020, Neil Kelley certified the Statement of the Vote held on November 3, 2020, for a TWO-YEAR TERM.
On December 8, 2020, the Council approved Resolution # 20-54 with the following statement:
SECTION 4. The City Council does declare and determine that: Patricia “Trish” Kelley was elected as Member of the City Council for the term of two years; and Brian Goodell was elected as Member of the City Council for the term of two years.
Those two-year terms expire November 2022, NOT November 2024. The Council believes they have the power to extend their own terms of office. Do they?
