Council discusses State housing laws, City revenue projections, park renovation and more

council chamber

The City Council on Tuesday received an overview of new California housing laws; Fiscal Year 2023-25 revenue projections; and approved a contract for a park rehabilitation project, among other business.

Council Members received a detailed housing law overview of recent California legislation that takes effect July 1. Specific discussion concerned a potential future ValueRock Realty project, which is the property owner of the “Gardens” at 27001 La Paz. This area was not rezoned for housing as part of the Housing Element adopted by the Council in 2021. No planning application or “pre-application” has been received from ValueRock, and as extensively reported by the City, the City Council unanimously denied the mixed-use zoning district text proposed by ValueRock in 2022.

As part of the City’s process for developing the FY 2023-25 City budget, the Council received a comprehensive report of revenue projections and a timeline of the process.

Council Members also unanimously approved a contract award for the Madrid Fore Park play area rehabilitation project.

In other Council news, Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control Director Lora Young spoke about the issue of the Aedes mosquito in Mission Viejo, the Vector Control’s plan for them over the next 3 to 5 years, and how residents can participate.

The City Council normally meets at 6 pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Meetings are streamed live on the City’s website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the City's eNewsletter and follow the City's official social media sites for the most accurate, up-to-date information.
