Council to recognize outstanding Marines, Hometown Hero and CIF girls softball champions June 14
The City Council on Tuesday, June 14 will recognize outstanding members of the City's adopted Headquarters Battalion of the 1st Marine Division; Hometown Hero; and CIF girls softball champions, among other business.
For their outstanding efforts, Lance Corporal Andres Cervantes will be recognized as "Marine of the Quarter" and Sergeant Destiny Dempsey as "Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter." The City Council adopted the Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division from Camp Pendleton in 2006 to support the Marines and their families. Shortly after, the volunteer Mission Viejo Marines and Sailors Adoption Committee was formed and has worked to recognize the incredible men and women who serve our country.
Lucy Dunn, who has led the Orange County Business Council as president and CEO for more than 16 years, will be recognized as Mission Viejo's Hometown Hero. This award was created in 1996 to identify and recognize folks whose noble qualities and personal achievements make them heroes worthy of our admiration.
During her tenure, Lucy has become one of the region's most influential voices and trusted advocates for the business community. She has built consensus among leaders in government and academia to help secure billions of dollars for infrastructure improvements, facilitate the completion of key water and transportation projects, advance workforce and affordable housing initiatives, narrow gaps in skills and education among the local workforce, and position Orange County as a world leader and coveted destination for innovative companies. Her countless efforts have benefitted the region and City of Mission Viejo.
In addition to the recognitions, which also include a proclamation for the 50th Anniversary of Title IX and recognition of the Mission Viejo High School girls softball team's CIF Division II Championship, the City Council will consider adopting a revised budget for Fiscal Year 2022-23. The robust budget reflects General Fund revenue and other resources increasing by more than $4.5 million. This boon to City coffers is reflective of our local businesses rebounding strongly from the pandemic.
The Council's June 14 meeting starts at 6 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center. Meetings are streamed live on the City's website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the City's eNewsletter and follow the City's official social media sites for the most accurate, up-to-date information.

Will you be doing a story on the Oso Creek tunnel and the mural project that will be going on inside of it? My husband is the artist, so I was just wondering. Thank you!
