Council takes bold, visionary step toward revitalizing City's Downtown Core

bridge crossing rendering

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed the Core Area Vision Plan -  a bold, visionary first step in addressing the economic fallout of the pandemic and revitalizing the City's Downtown Core area to benefit this community for generations to come.

Working on this community's behalf, the Council's decision was based on the community's robust feedback in the early stages of this project that helped shape the vision for a lifestyle destination connecting our civic and retail core to more restaurants, shops and cultural arts activities.

To make this happen, Council Members on Tuesday approved the options for financing the purchase of the Stein Mart site off Marguerite Parkway -  the first tangible action toward implementing the community-driven vision for a walkable village, paseo, and incredible entry that connects to Oso Creek and Trail.

If you missed the meeting, watch the exciting details at this link. You can also gain a sense of the unique and historic move by watching this brief video.

Please bring in lovely, good restaurants (no big chains). I am sooo tired of driving to San Juan Capistrano, Rancho Santa Marguerita or Orange to find decent places to dine. How did they get so far ahead of us in this regard????

Love the idea and concept. How are you going to increase the water flow to make the creek more attractive to visitors? You might consider a eco friendly circulation system that recycles water, fills the creek, promotes wildlife and provides a more enjoyable view. Great decision to pursue this project.

We lived in MV 18 years and all three of our children went through the schools there and now it will be revitalized! Glad to read the city council moved ahead with their vision!

Thank you for your thoughtful work. Mission Viejo is a beautiful city due to its leadership and strong community support. The new plan is very exciting.

In a word, ‘community’
Great thanks to those sitting to the right of the members of the City Council and those behind them within City Hall for producing a presentation of due diligence.

I watched your video carefully, and still don’t know where the “downtown core area” is. When we moved here recently, I asked our realtor where downtown is located, she said there is none. So far, I have found nothing but ugly strip malls, no downtown, no town .
Mission Viejo appears to be simply a bedroom community. Please tell me where the downtown core is now, and where I can find your stunning paseo in the future. I hope it happens, and Amen to the person who asked for real restaurants.

Spanish Aesthetics:
Shade, Safety and Shops.

Shade: If you do not have the entire walk-way with shade available, then there is no point in building anything here. People will stay away in droves if it is so hot (as it is 300 days out of the year here). Make the shade from beautiful trees, ivy, shade canopies, pergolas or pavilions.

Safety: A bridge should connect from the west side of Marguerite to the rose garden at the library to the east side of Marguerite. Of course this will allow safe foot traffic and it should also be shaded as well with the Spanish aesthetics that Mission Viejo was built upon. Having shaded walk ways will need supports, whether a tree, metal structure or building will enclose said walkway as to add beauty and safety to the Core.

Shops: Please make all shops/restaurants (etc.) in the Spanish Aesthetics that Mission Viejo was built upon.

It would also be nice to make a park on the north-west side of Oso / Marguerite.

Sure Sure, spend those taxpayers dollars. Since the city is not in the business of managing businesses like this, it means another contract to someone to manage this ting. Wonder whose relative will get the contract.

Mission Viejo currently has very poor retail areas. I miss Steinmart and smaller shops. I don’t always want to go to the Mall (also leaves a lot to be desired) to shop for clothing. All shopping is pretty scattered
