Kiwanis Club recognizes students' outstanding efforts

Students from Mission Viejo High, Capistrano High and Tesoro High schools were recognized for their achievements this week by the Kiwanis Club of Mission Viejo.

The students were selected based on leadership, academic excellence and community volunteerism.  The following students received recognition certificates for the second quarter of the school year:

 

 

Mission Viejo High School

  • Jonathan Chapman was selected for mentoring students in the beginning automotive program.  He is a senior at Mission and is considered a well-rounded teen.  
  • Casey Surch is a reporter for the school’s Diablo Heat paper and a Model United Nations participant. 
  • Talia Beach is a freshman and stood out because of her excellence in academics and quality of work, which impressed her engineering design teacher.

Capistrano High School

  • Luis Hernandez Lopez is a hard-working student who stays busy with the orchestra and a school beautification project.  He aspires to be a chemical engineer and study at UCLA.
  • Jasmine Horriat was feted for her academic excellence and leadership in establishing an American Cancer Club at Tesoro that last year raised $10,000.  She plans to study medicine. 
  • Ruben Mendoza was recognized for overcoming personal challenges to reach his goal of a high school diploma. 

Tesoro High School

  • Sage Moore was invited to attend a student leadership conference and has twice received the Presidential Service Award.  She is an active member of the Kiwanis Key Club and Habitat for Humanity.  She is also in choir and on the school’s dance team.  She plans to study business and entertainment in college.
  • Ashley Teves is a focused student with a 4.2 grade-point average.  Ashley is known for being innovative and positive.  She is a concert master in Tesoro’s string orchestra and plans to study computer science and engineering at UCLA.
  • Albert Yu is described as brilliant and humble.  He sets the grade curve in all his classes and is admired by his peers thanks to his helpful nature. 

The Kiwanis Club of Mission Viejo supports and fosters the education and success of local students through quarterly recognition events and mentoring teens in leadership at the high schools’ Key Clubs.
