Lifeguard Certification Course offered at our Recreation Centers

lifeguard by pool

If you want a rewarding job this summer and beyond, consider working as a lifeguard at our recreation centers.

Lifeguard classes are available to help you become certified to work as a pool lifeguard. If you’re a swimmer and love the water, this could be your calling!  Even though pool lifeguard positions typically attract the high school and college crowd, retired folks with a passion for water safety and working outdoors are encouraged to take the course and work year-round.

The minimum age for the course is 15, and all participants must pass a swimming and skills test. If you want to work as a City of Mission Viejo lifeguard and are not certified, these courses would fulfill the necessary requirements before applying. The class does not guarantee employment with the City, but information about applying for a lifeguard position is provided once the course is completed.

For more information, download the flier or contact us at fitness@cityofmissionviejo.org or 949-859-4348.

I was interested in taking a lifeguard certification class over the summer and noticed that you held several classes in May. Do you plan on hosting any more classes in the month of June?

June 2020 - At this time, the City does not have any community courses planned for certifications. Red Cross is updating all their guidelines due to the current pandemic and certification outlines are evolving to protect all those involved. We do have our Junior Lifeguard course still planned in July at this time, but we will be reassessing at the beginning of the month to confirm the status of the course and it doesn’t include a certification. The course is to prepare junior guards for a future as a lifeguard with a great experience and a foundation of education.

The City usually provides community Lifeguard courses from early spring (February) through the beginning of summer (May). We look forward to being able to host these courses onsite again soon.

Hi,
My son is 15 in May and needs the certification before than to apply for our neighborhood pool. Can he take the course before his birthday?

Also, how much is the course and certification?

Thanks,
Steve Dal Porto
