Mission Viejo to commemorate Memorial Day May 30

veterans memorial day

The City will pay homage to the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country during its Memorial Day ceremony at 8:30 am on Monday, May 30 in The Kershaw Gardens at 200 Civic Center.

The ceremony will include guest speakers Colonel Seth W.B Folsom, Commanding Officer of Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division; and Brigadier General Peter B. Cross, United States Army, Retired; along with a color guard, rifle salute, live vocal performance and taps.

The American Heroes Tribute Banners honoring veterans who have lost their lives in combat will serve as the backdrop of Mission Viejo's Memorial Day tribute. The 3-foot by 9-foot banners honor American soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. The banners will be on display mid-May through June 3.

As part of the City's SNAP initiative (Special Needs Adaptive Programming), this special event will feature sign language interpretation for the hearing-impaired; increased handicapped parking; seating accommodations for folks with physical limitations; and the ability to watch the live broadcast on Cox Channel 30 and AT& T Channel 99.

Coffee and light refreshments will be served following the ceremony. For more information, call 949-470-3061.

Mission Viejo VFW Post 6024, the All-State and All-American award-winning VFW Post, will assist with their honored rifle squad. Also, don't forget the VFW helps all veterans in need. They help them through your generous donations at stores where the post members give away Buddy Poppies. All funds go to support veterans as the VFW is an all-volunteer organization.

The Memorial Day celebration is a wonderful event that honors all that paid the ultimate sacrifice.

I am the Gold Star Mother of Sgt John C. Barcellano, United States Army. I will attend to pay my respects to all who've died while serving their country. Thank you for honoring our nation's heroes.
