Presentations during Tuesday’s Council meeting focused on exciting upgrades and efforts in our community

The City Council meeting on Tuesday focused on exciting City facility upgrades and efforts throughout the community.  

During the presentation part of the public meeting, City staff spoke about how the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center has continued to serve the community throughout the pandemic. In fact, volunteers at the center delivered more than 64,000 meals to seniors last year and more than 36,000 meals so far this year.   

Other good news reported included the success of Labor Day weekend reopening of the newly refurbished Montanoso. More than 900 people flocked to the facility to enjoy its amenities.  Along with Montanoso, the courts at the Marguerite Tennis Pavilion were recently resurfaced, and the Pavilion continues to be a popular spot among dedicated and generous residents. The Pavilion recently raised more than $25,000 to teach tennis to autistic children as a part of the City’s SNAP initiative, and the Konrad Reuland Charity Tennis and Pickleball Tournament raised more than $43,000 for local charities.  

Other presentations on Tuesday included Chief of Police Services Captain Chris McDonald providing an overview of an eBike Safety Plan and what Police Services is doing to educate, engage and enforce bike safety rules in the community. Outstanding members of the City’s adopted Headquarters Battalion of the 1st Marine Division of Camp Pendleton were also honored for their efforts.   

The Council proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month, and John Ralls, a Board Member of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, discussed the needs of countless families throughout the region and how folks can help.   

In other news, City Attorney William Curley spoke briefly about a recent ruling by an Orange County Superior Court Judge, and said no changes will be made until the Court of Appeals renders a decision.   

The Council meets for business items starting at 6 pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.
