See historical thriller film Sept. 16
Join the Mission Viejo Community of Character Committee for a free screening of the "The Post" at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 16.
"The Post" is a 2017 American historical thriller directed by Steven Spielberg with Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in the starring roles. It tells the story of the fight to release the Pentagon Papers by the New York Times and Washington Post in the early 1970s. The film focuses on the issue of Freedom of the Press and the struggle between citizens' right to know and the government's right to keep documents secret. That struggle was resolved in 1971 by the U.S. Supreme Court in New York Times Co v. United States. However, the issue of Freedom of the Press is still controversial today.
The film will be shown on a theater-size screen with theater-style seating and surround-sound in the Mission Viejo Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center Drive.
The film presentation features this month's character trait of "responsibility." Since it is rated PG-13, it may not be suitable for younger children. Retired history teacher Bob Hayes will host a post-film discussion on the film and Constitutional Right to Freedom of the Press.
