The City of Mission Viejo is hosting Drop-and-Go Food Drives from 9-11 am on Saturday, September 26 and October 24 at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24392 Veterans Way.

The drive-through events will benefit South County Outreach, Families Forward and Family Assistance Ministries (respectively), which all work to help the less fortunate in the area.

With an excessive heat wave impacting the region, the City of Mission Viejo is encouraging residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.

To stay safe during extreme heat, remember the following tips:

Construction continues on Newhart Middle School’s new STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) building.

When completed next summer, the building will house 10 classrooms, four standard classrooms and six science/art labs.

The general contractor recently finished welding activities and erecting steel for the structure and is pouring grade beams and footings this week – around 400 cubic yards or 44 cement trucks. Prepping the pad for the building slab follows.

Despite the immense challenges associated with COVID-19, Mission Hospital has earned a multitude of distinctions.

In July, Modern Healthcare selected Mission Hospital as one of the top 150 Best Places to Work in Health Care. Only 150 health care organizations across the country were honored with this distinction, and Mission is one of only two hospitals recognized in Orange County. The other hospital is St. Jude Regional Medical Center in Fullerton, also a member of Providence St. Joseph Health.

Coronavirus testing for first responders is now available through an appointment-based drive-through site at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Orange County law enforcement, firefighters and EMT first responders can receive COVID-19 testing via a dedicated lane. Participants may be asymptomatic or symptomatic and must bring identification and proof of insurance.

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), in partnership with the State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 12, is conducting a study about how extreme weather affects the Orange County rail corridor.

Share your thoughts on how to improve OC train stations by taking a quick community survey at OCrailsurvey.com. For more information, visit www.octa.net/railstudy.

The County of Orange has launched a new SafeDineOC COVID-Safe Restaurant Campaign to incentivize OC restaurants to follow California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
